Click the Spark Button on an operator to generate a new sound for that specific operator.
This lets you explore fresh variations without changing the rest of the patch.
The Cross Mod knob applies frequency modulation from Operator 2 to Operator 1. Specifically the output of Operator 2 is fed into the modulator of Operator 1 to create what is referred to in Frequency Modulation synthesis as a different “algorithm”. By default, Halogen FM has an algorithm of two operators in parallel, but introducing Xmod creates an additional algorithm of all four oscillators (both Operators) in Series.
This adds extra harmonic complexity and can create aggressive, metallic, or evolving textures, depending on the settings of both operators.
Use it to explore deeper modulation interactions and unlock richer, more experimental timbres.
The Ring knob controls the amount of frequency detuning inside an operator. At low amounts (less than 12 o'clock) the knob introduces subtle detune between modulator and carrier which creates slow movement. Above 12 o'clock the modulator frequency becomes much faster and inharmonic to the carrier. Inharmonic frequency ratios in Frequency Modulation synthesis create rich, often metallic and complex tones.
Use it to add edgy textures, bell-like sounds, or to push patches into more experimental territory.
The Ratio sets how fast the modulator oscillator moves compared to the carrier. This controls the pitch relationship between them and shapes the overall tone.
By adjusting the ratio, you control the character of the sound — from clean and smooth to rich, sharp, or unusual.
The Frequency knob controls the fundamental frequency of the operator. In other words this knob selects the frequency in multiples of the input note frequency from which the ratio is calculated. Use this parameter to shift the frequency spectrum of the operator and differentiate it from the other operator.
Frequency has modulation controls for the LFO.
The Fix button locks the modulating oscillator to a fixed frequency. When enabled, use the Ring knob to choose a particular frequency to fix to.
Instead of following the pitch of the notes you play, the modulator runs at a constant frequency, adding stable, inharmonic textures when modulating the carrier oscillator.
