Oddity 3 comes with three built-in effects; Distortion, Delay & Reverb. Each of these effects can be turned on or off via the green LED in the top left of each effect section. It’s also possible to lock any or all of the effects so that you retain your current effects settings even when changing patches. To activate the Lock, click on the padlock at the top-right of each effect, whereupon it’ll become ‘greyed out’.

Distortion

<aside> 📚 In the 1970’s & 80’s musicians would often use guitar effects pedals to alter a synthesiser’s resultant sound. Two hugely popular effects at that time were Phaser and Distortion pedals, and, interestingly, artists who utilised an Odyssey through a distortion pedal later inspired Chris Huggett to implement the drive circuitry on the wonderful OSC OSCar. Chris’ reasoning was “it will give the OSCar more bite and also save musicians carrying a distortion pedal to a gig”.

While Oddity 3 can sound as raucous as the original Odyssey, we thought. “Perhaps it needs to go to eleven?” So we added a dedicated distortion effect to Oddity 3. But here’s the rub, while it can sound magnificent, when used with an already raucous sound, it won’t take that sound to ‘twelve’.

Please be mindful of gain structure too. As we already pointed out, you have levels for each VCO and VCA Gain, and by introducing too much gain into the signal path, it’s easy to get into clipping territory. The secret (as with everything in life) is ‘don’t take the piss’. Be elegant and considered with your decisions of where to use it and when to leave it alone.

Gain

Turning this clockwise progressively introduces distortion. Turning counter-clockwise reduces distortion.

Tone

As the name suggests, this alters the tone of the Distortion effect.

Delay

Delay Amount

Controls the level of the delay.

Delay Feedback

Controls the amount of feedback signal output by the delay. A short feedback time would produce a minimal amount of repeat echoes and a long feedback time would produce an infinite quantity of repeat echoes.

Delay Time Knobs (Left & Right)

These control the delay times for left and right delay lines.****

When illuminated, this feeds the left delay signal into the right signal and vice versa, to create a ping pong delay signal.
